Smart Repair vs Full Panel Respray: Which Do You Need?
A smart repair fixes a small area of damage without respraying the whole panel, which keeps the cost down and the turnaround quick — often a day or two. A full panel respray covers the entire panel and is the right choice when damage is large, spread out, or the paint is faded. The rule of thumb: small and localised means smart repair; large, deep or across the panel means a full respray.
When a smart repair is ideal
- Car-park dinks and small dents.
- Light key scratches and scuffs that haven't spread far.
- Bumper scuffs and kerbed corners.
- Small stone chips grouped in one area.
- Anything localised where the surrounding paint is still in good condition.
When you need a full panel respray
- Damage that covers a large part of the panel.
- Deep scratches through to bare metal, or dents that need filling and reshaping.
- Rust, lacquer peel or heavy fading across the panel.
- Multiple areas of damage on the same panel.
- Where the existing paint is too faded for a localised repair to blend invisibly.
The deciding factor is often the paint's condition, not just the damage. On faded or metallic paint, a tiny patch repair can stand out — so blending the whole panel is what actually makes the fix invisible.

Usually, yes. Because a smart repair targets only the damaged area rather than the whole panel, it uses less material and labour, so it's cheaper and quicker where the damage is small and localised.
Will a smart repair be noticeable?
Done properly and colour-matched to your paint code, a smart repair should be invisible. The exception is very faded or tricky metallic paint, where blending the full panel gives a better result.
